Kinder surprise in modular group rings

Abstract: 

In dealing with various aspects of groups, one often prefers to pass to their

associated Lie algebras. For many groups, however, it is not possible to

establish a strong correspondence of this sort and one can only hope to see a

silhouette. We will take a look at one such instance, namely the so-called Fake

degree conjecture, and reveal a surprising obstruction of Galois cohomological

flavor, realized in modular group rings.
