Nutrient enrichment in grasslands provides extra plant growth, and the animals that eat these plants cannot keep up in most places. This increase in biomass not only reduces biodiversity in the landscape but also increases the risk of natural fires. This is shown by research from the Nutrient Network, a worldwide research network of which Prof Dr Harry Olde Venterink and Dr Judith Sitters of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel are members. The results were published last month in the leading journal Nature Communications.

The Flemish government’s Methusalem programme  offers top researchers long-term structural funding, making them less dependent on external, project-based financing. It is one of the most prestigious types of funding in Flanders. This year, two researchers from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will receive this support: Prof Mathieu Vinken and Prof Gert Desmet. They each receive €300,000 a year for seven years, renewable until retirement.

Op initiatief van Minister Ben Weyts werd het universitair Steunpunt Centrale Toetsen opgericht. Experts van de vijf Vlaamse universiteiten, de AP Hogeschool en de Arteveldehogeschool bundelen de komende vijf jaar hun kennis voor het ontwikkelen en uitrollen van de gecentraliseerde toetsen. De toetsen zullen aan het einde van het vierde en het zesde leerjaar en aan het einde van het tweede en het zesde middelbaar afgenomen worden bij alle Vlaamse leerlingen. In het secundair worden de eerste toetsen in 2023 afgenomen, het ­lager onderwijs volgt in 2024.

De Vakgroep Wiskunde en Data Science van de VUB coördineert het werkdomein wiskunde en zal de toetsen voor het secundair onderwijs ontwikkelen.
