Seminar: Factors influencing exposure to pollutants in the Flemish population

17/10/2017 - 10:00

Scientists and society alike are increasingly interested in the exposure of the general population to environmental pollutants. For this reason, biomonitoring campaigns are being conducted all over the world. However, simply measuring a concentration of a pollutant in blood or urine is not very informative. We also have to identify and account for factors that influence the exposure in the general population in order to interpret the results in a correct way and better plan future campaigns. Perhaps even more important is that knowledge of these factors can provide policy makers with a handlebar in order to control exposure when it is deemed problematic. This presentation will talk about how we identify these determinants of exposure in our studies, why and how we control for them, and how they translate into policy.
