Hendrik studies the role of habitat selection affecting species distribution patterns in metacommunities using aquatic insect communities as models. He combines field and mesocosm experiments with survey data and supervising BSc, MSc and PhD students. He is beneficiary of a three year postdoctoral fellowship with the Scientific Research Fund Flanders (FWO).
From early childhood he had a passion for (aquatic) biodiversity. After finishing a graduate in Biochemistry, he enrolled at KULeuven to study Biology. His Master thesis dealt with the combined effects of food deprivation and insecticide exposure in the damselfly Ischnura elegans under the supervision of prof. Robby Stoks. Afterwards, he did his PhD in the same group at the KU Leuven on community ecotoxicology and the importance of dispersal as a mediating factor, with a main focus on water boatmen (Corixidae). On two additional field trips in the margin of his research (to Sheffield, UK and Doñana, Spain), he developed a strong interest in dispersal and habitat selection shaping local communities. After working for over two years as an independent researcher at pcfruit, Sint-Truiden, he successfully applied for a post-doctoral research project at the VUB in the group of prof. Bram Vanschoenwinkel.
