Promotors: Prof. dr. Philippe Claeys (VUB), Prof. dr. Karin Nys (VUB)

Jean Bourgain started his career at the VUB, where he obtained his PhD in 1977 under Freddy Delbaen. After a professorship at VUB (1981-1985), he combined a position as J.L. Doob professor in mathematics at the University of Illinois with a position at the IHES in Bures-sur-Yvette, France. From 1994 he was appointed at the prestigious Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, where he became IBM von Neumann professor in 2010.

During his career, Jean Bourgain was honoured with the highest mathematical distinctions, including the Salem prize (1983),  the Ostrowski prize (1991), the Fields medal (1994), the Shaw prize (2010), the Crafoord prize (2012), the Breakthrough prize (2017) and the Leroy P. Steele prize (2018).

In commemoration of Jean Bourgain, we invite you to this `day of analysis’, in which prominent mathematicians will highlight aspects of their work which have close ties to the research in which Jean Bourgain was active.

The Hidden Subgroup Problem

Jullie kennen waarschijnlijk al langer onze droom om een Platform Wiskunde Vlaanderen op te starten dat, naar analogie met het Platform Wiskunde Nederland (cfr. lezing Wil Schilders op BIMS I), iedereen zou verbinden die met wiskunde in aanraking komt. Zonder polarisatie tussen "zuiver of toegepast", "wetenschap en technologie", "nuttig of mooi", of om het even wat anders. Sindsdien maakten we wat teksten, die een soort van omvattende visie moeten uitdragen op wat wiskunde is en betekent voor de maatschappij. We probeerden ook steun te verzamelen voor het idee bij beleidsmakers.

We dachten dat het een goed idee zou zijn om "π-dag" aan te grijpen om wat publieke belangstelling op te wekken voor wiskunde, en voor dit initiatief. We stelden daarvoor een soort missieverklaring op. Die zie je hier: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Adyh1jK3YrWLrqNp_B8UcnuWUlVSeu79siJa...
Die mission statement is o.a. ondertekend door de 5 rectoren, de voorzitters van de onderwijskoepels, door jullie als VVWL, de BMS en een aantal prominente niet-wiskundigen (bedrijfsleiders en mediafiguren).

Hopelijk zal er wat media-aandacht zijn voor die missieverklaring. Het zou goed zijn dat de wiskundige wereld zich mee kan scharen achter dit verbindende initiatief. Zouden we u daarom mogen vragen of jullie deze zouden willen ondertekenen?  Tegelijk ook de de vraag kunnen doorsturen binnen jullie netwerk met de vraag om de missieverklaringmee te onderschrijven? Iedereen die zich erin kan vinden, mag een mailtje sturen naar verklaring@platformwiskunde.be met naam en affiliatie(s), zodat wij die kunnen toevoegen aan de namenlijst.

Met deze mail willen we u op de hoogte stellen van wat er op π-dag zal gebeuren, zodat u dit, als directe betrokkene, vanop de eerste rij kan volgen. Op 14 maart zal de website https://platformwiskunde.be gelanceerd worden, waarop we o.a. onze visieteksten verspreiden en links verzamelen naar reeds bestaande initiatieven rond wiskunde in Vlaanderen. Indien u weet heeft van zo'n link, meld ons die zeker op contact@platformwiskunde.be. We kunnen altijd iets onbewust over het hoofd zien.

In de media gebeurt dan het volgende:

de VLIR verspreidt een persbericht waarin de rectoren hun steun uitspreken voor dit initiatief
in de Standaard verschijnt een dubbelinterview met Ann Dooms en Giovanni Samaey
de VRT plant een reportage, waarvan de vorm momenteel nog onduidelijk is
de Universiteit van Vlaanderen bundelt alle wiskundelezingen
wie weet gebeurt er nog wat de dag zelf.

Uiteraard betekent een intentieverklaring nog niet dat we er al zijn. Integendeel: nu begint het pas! We gaan toch al publiek, om te proberen wat momentum te creëren. De bedoeling nu is om wat brede steun te verzamelen voor het idee om zoiets te doen, zodat we nadien ook een bredere pool van mensen kunnen bereiken om initiatieven mee uit te werken. Indien u interesse heeft om mee initiatieven uit te werken voor onderwijs, onderzoek, innovatie of wetenschapscommunicatie, horen we het graag. Ook dat kan via contact@platformwiskunde.be.

Professor Willy Baeyens of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will fertilize the oceans to save the climate. This fertilization stimulates the plankton growth and as a consequence increases the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere. And CO2 is the big evildoer of the earth’s warming up. Professor Baeyens is carrying out this research with the SeaExplorer robot.

Everybody knows that the CO2-concentration in the atmosphere has to be reduced drastically. This can be achieved in 2 ways: by restricting the CO2-production or by increasing the CO2 absorption. For the latter, marine phytoplankton is extremely efficient. However: research indicates that it is not everywhere as abundantly present in the oceans. How can one arrange that its biomass increases? The answer is fertilization with nutrients, that are essential substances for the plankton. To know which and where nutrients have to be added, novel research is needed. Therefore, VUB bought an ocean robot and equipped it with special, home-made sensors.

make it possible to map their spatial distribution.

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is opening a position for a postdoctoral fellow on the SoLid experiment. The goal of SoLid  is to probe electron antineutrino disappearance with a novel Lithium-6 composite scintillator (SoLid) at close stand off from the BR2 research reactor (5-10m) located in Mol, Belgium. The highly segmented plastic scintillation detector enhanced with Lithium-6 is designed to provide a highly sensitive measurement of the rate and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos to address the so-called reactor anomaly and test precisely the ratio of observed to predicted number of electron antineutrino events at various distances. SoLid will provide a powerful test of the sterile neutrino hypothesis and new data for a high enriched Uranium core, a key ingredient in the prediction of reactor antineutrino flux.

Peter L. Galison is hoogleraar Geschiedenis van de Wetenschappen en Natuurkunde (Harvard University). In zijn werk verkent Galison de twintigste eeuwse microfysica (atoom, kern, deeltjesfysica) en zoekt hij de banden tussen de geschiedenis van de wetenschap en de naburige velden, zoals de kunstgeschiedenis. Deze lezing gaat over de complexiteit van het begrip tijd, op het punt waar geschiedenis, kunst en fysica samenkomen. Een unieke en verhelderende kijk op de oorsprong van de tijd zoals wij die vandaag kennen.
