Biology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel

For details of the Biology program in English, please look at menu on the left under the "English/Français" heading. Note that a description of each course is available in English.

Study Biology in English

1) Erasmus programme

You come as an "Erasmus" student and follow part of your curriculum at the VUB, it can be a semester, a whole academic year, the Master thesis or eventually a summer stage.
A large number of courses of the Master programme are offered in English to all students. Courses are grouped in semester modules of 30 ECTS. Note that none of the Bachelor classes are offered in English.
You can contact the Biology departement for help in setting-up the curriculum you want to follow here. The Biology coordinator is Franky.Bossuyt@vub.ac.be
Note that all professors and assistants speak English.

For more general information about the Erasmus programme at the VUB, please go here and for information for prospective students, go here. Be aware that your home University should have an agreement with the VUB to allow for Erasmus exchanges. If it is not the case, such an agreement can be concluded but it takes nearly a year before it is effective.

2) Enrollement as a regular student

Since a large number of courses of the Master programme are offered in English to every Biology student, it is possible to complete the two years of the Master in Biology in English.
Note that this is a completely new possibility (the Master starts in 2007-08) so contact us for confirmation.

However, to be able to enroll as a regular student, you must have a good command of English.
In short, to study at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel a certificate of good command of English is ALWAYS required (except for native speakers). This is covered by:

  • proof of having studied in English
  • a copy of a 'Test of English as Foreign Language' (TOEFL) with a minimum result of 550
  • In exceptional circumstances, the Language Institute of the University (ITO) will itself test your English proficiency.

See the VUB webpage about the language tests here.

We are sorry but several details of the Master program are not yet finalized and it is not yet available online. It should be available in in November.

If you are interested, you can always contact the Head of the department or the secretary.

Study Biology in Dutch

It is possible for non-Dutch speakers to study Biology in Dutch.
Two possibilities are offered:

1) Erasmus programme

You come as an "Erasmus" student and follow part of your curriculum at the VUB, it can be a semester, a whole academic year or eventually a summer stage.
You can contact the Biology departement for help in setting-up the curriculum you want to follow here. The Biology coordinator is Franky.Bossuyt@vub.ac.be

Most of the Erasmus students are following courses in English (at Master level see below) but it is also possible to follow courses in Dutch, even if you are not a Dutch native speaker. The Erasmus office at the VUB organizes Dutch language classes in Augustus-September to help you and the VUB has a language departement and a special ATHOS program (here) to help raising and refining the Dutch level of students. Moreover, a language school for adults where you can learn/improve your Dutch is located on campus.
Note that all professors and assistants speak English.

For more general information about the Erasmus programme at the VUB, please go here. Be aware that your home University should have an agreement with the VUB to allow forErasmus exchanges. If it is not the case, such an agreement can be concluded but it takes nearly a year before it is effective.

2) Enrollement as a regular student

To be able to enroll as a regular student, you must either have followed at least one year of academic classes in Dutch (for example your last year of high school in a Flemish school) or you must pass a language test. See the VUB webpage about the language tests here.

In short, the language departement of the VUB organizes tests during september before the start of the academic year. You can also pass the test (either PAT or PPT level) organized by the CNaVT organization which delivers the Certificate of Dutch as a foreign language (the Dutch equivalent of the English TOEFL). This test is organized (generally in May) on the VUB campus by the language school for adults.
