Laboratory and analytical facilities

The VUB Earth System Science research unit hosts a laboratory specialized in isotope biogeochemistry. These facilities are unique in Belgium, and intensely used for research projects in various fields in geosciences and environmental sciences. The laboratory is accessible to Belgian and international scientists for collaborative research efforts. These instruments render possible the determination of isotopic ratios (H, N, C, O) at high precision level in rocks, sediment, organic matter and water.

Instrument specifics:

  • 1 Picarro 2130i Cavity Ring Down instrument for D/H & 18O/16O determination in waters
  • 1 Nu Perspective Gas Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometer with Nu Carb and gas bench peripherals
  • 2 Thermo Delta XL Gas Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometers
  • 1 Thermo Delta V Gas Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometer
  • 4 lines for manual CO2 extraction
  • Kiel III Carbonate Device for automatically processing carbonate samples
  • Elemental Analyzer to measure C & N in organic matter and dissolved gases
  • Gas Chromatography unit for the analyses of isotopic compound-specific biomarkers
  • Thermo HiperTOC Analyzer for isotope on dissolved organic carbon
  • 1 Bruker handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometer
  • 1 Bruker M4 Tornado µX-ray fluorescence spectrometer
