How were craftsmen manufacturing ceramics thousands of years ago in Cyprus and what does that tell us about these ancient societies

Project summary:

The study of ancient ceramics reveals valuable information about the technology available to the people who produced them. But, most importantly, it provides insights on the structure and the needs of the society that was using them. I use analytical techniques borrowed from material science and geochemistry to study the raw materials used by ancient potters in ancient Cyprus. By understanding their ceramic traditions and how they evolved I aim to eventually understand the relationships between different potting communities of the island.

Field sites:  

Cyprus: ceramics from the Philia period (2500-2300 BC) and Late Bronze Age (1600-1200 BC)
