Elias works as a teaching assistant and PhD researcher at the Biology Department (promotor: Prof. Dr. Harry Olde Venterink). He assists courses about plant taxonomy & ecology. Besides this, his research focuses on plant-soil interactions for invasive and endangered species in Brazilian and European grasslands. To do this he sets up greenhouse experiments to examine which plant species easily accumulate parasites and/or mutualistic symbionts. Using different nitrogen isotopes he can investigate which nitrogen forms are more easily taken up by different plant species.
