How do planets and small planetary bodies grow; how do they melt to produce cores, mantles, and crusts
Sometimes the tiny features preserved in rocks and meteorites tell us about reactions occurring throughout the Earth and planets. My research focuses on the research and evolution of planetary bodies. How do they grow; how do they melt to produce cores, mantles, and crusts? Can small natural and artificial samples give us insight into large-scale processes?
Mantle and crust of the Earth, and meteorites (these tend to be basaltic materials or closely related)
Elemental analysis by X-Ray Fluorescence (micro- and macro- scale, lab and portable); Triple-oxygen isotopes by Laser-Fluorination Infra-Red Mass Spectrometry (LFIRMS) and Sensitive High-mass Resolution Ion Micro-Probe (SHRIMP)
