Op 25 september 2019 vindt de derde editie van de conferentie THE BEAUTIFUL IMPACT OF MATHEMATICS IN SOCIETY (BIMS) plaats op de VUB campus met als thema "Wiskunde en Data Science".

Gauthier DIERICKX obtained on August 24 2018 the academic degree of Doctor of Sciences with the following doctoral thesis:
A general Darling-Erdős theorem and an integral test for sums of independent and identically distributed random vectors in Euclidean space.

VUB Chair lecture- The order of the factors DOES CHANGE the product

School children are taught the commutativity property in the negative form of what is written in the title. For example 4x5=5x4=20.
This is valid for the standard multiplication of numbers but fails for many other kinds of product, such as for example the product of matrices or the rotation of solids.

Alumna Ingrid Daubechies wint Gouden Erepenning

Met de Gouden Erepenningen huldigt het Vlaams Parlement mensen die zich langdurig verdienstelijk hebben gemaakt voor Vlaanderen. In een bijzondere huldezitting overhandigde voorzitter Jan Peumans vandaag 7 december een van de Gouden Erepenningen 2016 aan natuur- en wiskundige Ingrid Daubechies.

VUB Alumnus and Fields Medallist Jean Bourgain Celebrated

In the 1970s and 80s one of Belgium’s most brilliant minds studied and worked at VUB. Jean Bourgain has spent, however, the largest part of his career at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Valhalla for theorists. The institute plans to honour Bourgain for his contribution to the field of pure mathematics at a unique event.

Abelprijs 2016 voor Andrew Wiles

Het kon niet uitblijven, en dit jaar is hij dus aan de beurt: Andrew Wiles heeft de Abelprijs gekregen, de ‘Nobelprijs’ voor de wiskunde. Wiles was alleen onder collega’s bekend, toen hij in 1995 plotseling wereldfaam verwierf omdat hij er in was geslaagd de Laatste stelling van Fermat te bewijzen.

On the 16th of February Cédric Villani gave an inspiring talk on mathematics at the renowned TED conference. Villani tackles perplexing problems in mathematical physics, analysis and geometry with rigor, wit and a signature personal style.His Byronesque hair, colorful ascots and spider brooches have earned Cédric Villani the nickname “the Lady Gaga of Mathematics.” But this moniker has not obscured Villani’s deeper, serious mission: inspiring students to delve into the mysteries of mathematics. Villani’s fame is based on his work resolving difficult problems of kinetic theory, for which he received the Fields Medal in 2010. His book Birth of a Theorem is an exhilarating journey into the nocturnal dilemmas of mathematicians hot on the trail of discovery.
