I am affiliated both to the VUB and KU Leuven. Since 2017, I work on an FWO-funded postdoctoral research project titled “Recovery at Ground Zero, a unique biological record from inside the Chicxulub impact crater” (Grant 12Z6618N). In this project, I study the biological recovery following the Chicxulub impact at Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary, one of the most devastating events in the history of life. I am employing fossil phytoplankton (dinoflagellates) and ‘molecular fossils’ from the post-impact sediments retrieved by IODP Expedition 364 and from the El Kef boundary stratotype section (Tunisia), to investigate the biological recolonization of the ocean, both locally and globally. Comparing the recovery in the crater and at El Kef to other localities worldwide, such as the type-Maastrichtian in the Netherlands-Belgium border region, will provide a global view of recovery after this catastrophic event in Earth History.
