Vocatio Fellowship for David De Vleeschouwer, former AMGC member. On Wed. May 25, the VOCATIO foundation rewarded 15 young laureates from the humanities, sciences, arts, and medicine. Among them, our former PhD student David who received a 10.000 € grant to study the evolution of the Australian Monsoon over the last 6 million years. Portraits of the laureates appear this week in the popular Belgian magazines Knack and Le Vif.

VUB Alumnus and Fields Medallist Jean Bourgain Celebrated

In the 1970s and 80s one of Belgium’s most brilliant minds studied and worked at VUB. Jean Bourgain has spent, however, the largest part of his career at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Valhalla for theorists. The institute plans to honour Bourgain for his contribution to the field of pure mathematics at a unique event.

CERN geeft 300 TB gegevens vrij

Afgelopen vrijdag heeft CERN een dataset van meer dan 300 terabyte vrijgegeven. Het gaat om data die genomen is in 2011 bij de deeltjesversneller (Large Hadron Collider). De gegevens zijn zowel nuttig voor onderwijsdoeleinden als voor ‘citizen scientists’. VUB speelde hierin belangrijke rol.

Collaboratieve cartografie voor humanitaire hulp in Zuid-Kivu en Swaziland

Afgelopen zaterdag 16 april kwamen ruim 200 vrijwilligers bijeen in zeven universiteiten over heel België om samen gebieden in Kivu en Swaziland in kaart te brengen, ter ondersteuning van humanitaire hulporganisaties. Wellicht is dit de grootste operatie van dit type ooit – alle betrokkenen waren dan ook erg blij met de opkomst. Deze Mapathon werd georganiseerd door de departementen geografie van de Belgische universiteiten naar aanleiding van het Internationaal Jaar van de Cartografie. Ze werden hierbij ondersteund door vrijwilligers van OpenStreetMap, een wereldwijd initiatief voor gedetailleerde geodata onder vrije licentie, dat zich tot doel stelt kaarten van de hele wereld voor iedereen vrij beschikbaar te maken.

Geoffrey Janssens wint KWG-prijs voor promovendi

Tijdens het BeNeLuxMC 2016 hebben 6 kandidaten een voordracht gegeven in de strijd om de KWG Prijs. De prijs, een geldbedrag van 1000 euro, is toegekend aan Geoffrey Janssens voor zijn presentatie Identities of algebras and groups and their asymptotic behaviour.
