Belgian Geography Days

Drawing contest (EN)

The Teachers' day (Saturday, November 14th) will be finalized with the national award ceremony of the Barbara Petchenik Children's World Map Drawing Competition. This biennial competition, which is organised since 1993 by the International Cartographic Association, and is open to young pupils up to 16 years, is a tribute to Barbara Petchenik, a former vice president of the ICA, and a cartographer who had a particular interest in the way young people imagine the world. The purpose of the competition is to bring their vision of the world in a creative way in image or map.

From a large number of Belgian submissions (> 200) for the current edition of the contest, themed "My place in today's world", 30 drawings were selected. Three were selected by a national jury and three by the Belgian public to represent Belgium during the international drawing competition which took place in Rio de Janeiro in August 2015. Within the framework of the International Map Year 2015-2016 (http://www.internationalmapyear.be) the coming months a travelling exhibition will be organised where the 30 selected drawings will be exposed. The exhibition will start at VUB. From Wednesday 25 November until Saturday 19 December the drawings will be shown at Campus Oefenplein, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Brussel, in building D (free access from Monday until Friday from 8am until 6pm and on Saturday from 8am until 4pm).

All pupils whose drawing are exhibited (and their families) are invited to the opening of the exhibition, the award ceremony for the the six finalists, and the subsequent reception (registration was required before November 6). The 30 drawings that are part of the exhibition can be admired online at: http://www.internationalmapyear.be/petchenik.php
