On March 6th 2015 Koen Illeghems obtained the academic degree of DOCTOR in BIO-ENGINEERING SCIENCES with the following doctoral thesis:

(Meta)genomic approaches to gain insight into the cocoa bean fermentation ecosystem and its associated candidate functional starter cultures.

Een team van wetenschappers uit Brazilië en België heeft één van de zeldzaamste zoogdieren op aarde herontdekt, de Roraima-muis. Podoxymys roraimae komt alleen voor op de tepui’s of tafelbergen in het noorden van Zuid-Amerika. Het DNA van dit diertje wijst op oude verwantschappen met andere muizensoorten die zich hoofdzakelijk op het verafgelegen Braziliaanse plateau hebben verspreid in plaats van in de Andes of in de aangrenzende laaglanden van de Amazone.

VUB-wetenschappers in prestigieuze wetenschappelijke tijdschriften met bewijs van bestaan verleidingsferomonen bij salamanders

Deze maand publiceren onderzoekers van de VUB en KU Leuven de resultaten van een studie naar het bestaan van verleidingsferomonen bij salamandermannetjes in twee van de meest prestigieuze wetenschapsbladen in hun onderzoeksgebied: Proceedings of the Royal Society B London en Molecular Biology and Evolution.

Martine Leermakers is onlangs benoemd tot Associate Editor van Chemosphere, een van de meest prestigieuze wetenschappelijke tijdschriften op het gebied van chemie. Leermakers is onder meer verbonden aan de vakgroep Analytische en Milieuchemie van de VUB-faculteit Wetenschappen en de onderzoeksgroep Earth System Sciences.

Both Prof. Dr. Sebastiaan Eeltink and Prof. Dr. ir. Ken Broeckhoven are included in the list that indicates the most promising young scientists under 40 in the field of analytical separation science.

Gert Desmet Associate Editor of Analytical Chemistry

Since January 1st, 2015, Prof. Dr. ir. Gert Desmet has been appointed as Associate Editor of the prestigious journal Analytical Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. This journal is one of the four chemistry journals in Nature’s top 100 list of the most significant research journals.
